H. Why Churches Die - Hollis Greene

1. Converts do not become isciples

2. Disciples do not become apostles (send out ones)

3. Missions is a sign of maturity of any group of beleivers

I. You're on a Mission from God because of the Character of God

A. God is a sending God. Think of Abraham

B. Israel forgot about the mission that God had sent Abraham on to be a light to the nations and became inward focused on Israel. This is why God had to send prophets to them

C. Jesus Christ - cross-cultural missions (leaving heaven and coming to earth (Phil 2),

D. Holy Spirit - 60 times in the Book of Acts He is orchestrating the mission.

II. You're on a Mission from God because of the condition of the harvest (Matthew 9:36-38)

A. Jesus noticed the weary condition of the harvest

1. weary , scattered, exhausted

2. Jesus cared and to do missions it begins with a care

3. Do you have a real concern for the lost?

D. The harvest is plentiful

1. Notice that Jesus said, "pray for workers" not supervisors or managers

2. The harvest

III. You're on a Mission from God because of the commission of Jesus (Matthew 28)

A. Jesus said, "Go."

B. Are you saying why rather than when, where, how

C. Notice that Matthew 9 Jesus says for the apostles to pray and then in Mt 10 he tells those who he asked to pray to go.

D. This is a pattern in Scripture.

IV. You're on a Mission from God because of the coming of Jesus

A. Acts 1:1-11

B. We have a limited amount of time to fulfill the mission because Jesus is coming.

C. Titus 2

V. You're on a Mission from God because of the coming judgement

A. When we hear the word "harvest" we think evangelism

B. Harvest means judgement - "White for harvest"

C. Why white? The wheat is normally golden but when it is overripe it lightens and changes to whilte. This indicates that judgement is coming soon

1. Jeremiah 51

2. Joel 3

3. Matthew 13

APPLICATION:

1. Discuss the character of God and how it impacts missions in general and specifically in your role and life.

2. Look at your life and discuss the condition of the harvest in your many roles? What is the harvest like at home, at work, in the community

3. Take stock of the commision by Jesus in your life. Are you living up to what He has called you to?

4. Is there a sense of expectancy in your life of the coming of Jesus? If you say yes, then ask yourself, "Does my life exhibit this outwardly in my daily walk?"

5. Are you concerned for the harvest that God has placed in your path and looking to share Jesus becuase of the coming of Judgement?

Amen.
