Ecclesiastes 5:1-7
"You've Come to Church...Now What?"

Gospelcom Bible Gateway

"1 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

2Do not be rash with your mouth,
        And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
        For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
        Therefore let your words be few.
        3For a dream comes through much activity,
        And a fool's voice is known by his many words

4When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it;
        For He has no pleasure in fools.
        Pay what you have vowed--
        5Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

6Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands? 7For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God."

INTRODUCTION:

A. "The words of the preacher the son of David, King of Jerusalem" Who is this?

B. What does Ecclesiastes mean? It is one who congregates or brings into the sanctuary

C. Solomon is congregating his thoughts on life under the sun.

D. What does "under the sun mean"? What was his conclusion?

5. What are the implications of this?

6. Read Nehemiah 8:1-6

1 Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. 2So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. 3Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
4So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, "Amen, Amen!" while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

2. What about your marriage vows?

3. What about your commitment to serve in the church

1. The house of God

2. Vow to God

3. Fear God

B. Is the way you worship disconnected from the way you live?

C. What does "fear of the Lord' mean?

APPLICATION:

2. Be prepared to live "contra mundum" (against the world) in your walk of Christ.
