INTRODUCTION:

A. This message is to the southern kingdom (Judah) who were relying on ritual and not relationship.

I. The Problem - what they were trusting in

A. A ritual at a place rather than a relationship with a person

B. "Hear the word of the Lord..thus say's the Lord of Hosts"

1. What would you think if you were in the temple and you heard these words from Jeremiah?

2. We don't know if this was at the beginning of his ministry or the end.

3. The Six Kings of Jeremiah's ministry (cf. 2nd Chronicles 36)

a. Josiah brought reform,

b. Jehoahaz lasted 3 months and 10 days deported to Egypt

c. Replaced by Eliakim who was installed by King Sheeshak of Egypt who changed his name to Jehoiachim

d. Followed by Jehoiachin who lasted 3 months,

e. Zedekiah until the fall of Babylon in 596BC

4. Change your ways - never separate worship from God who is being worship. God is not looking for worship He is looking for worshipper.

a. The Place -John 4 ²¹Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship."

b. The People - ²¹Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. ²²You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. ²³But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. ²⁴God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

c. There is no such thing as holy places but there are Holy People

C. Why are places important? They house people who worship the Lord.

D. Christianity is not a religion it is the doing away of religion into a relationship based upon what happened upon the cross. The veil was ripped in two from the top down. Unfortunately, later on the rabbi's sewed back up the veil because they wanted the ritual and the place rather than the relationship.

E. Shiloh was the place where the tabernacle was built.

F. Jeremiah 7:16 is the first of three times that God told Jeremiah to stop praying for them

G. Who was the the queen of heaven in the Babylonian religion? Baal and Ashtoreth (God and Goddess of fertility and she was also the goddess of war)

H. What are the two reasons for the burning of the bones in Jeremiah 8?

I. Correlate Jeremiah 8:3 and Revelation 9:6

J. Backslider is the Bible 16 times. 13 out of the 16 are in Jeremiah.

K. Proverbs 14:14 gives us the definition of a backslider. Therefore existentialism.

L. Are the birds smarter than you?

A. Are you building your life on bible reading and bible obeying?

B. Why not?
